Learning to Chip at Umbrellas
I was learning to chip golf balls today. I was staked out on the beach near my parents house in the early morning, and there was a commercial outdoor umbrellas about thirty feet down the beach, with its wide berth and its long shadow in the early morning sun. There was an ad across the top of the umbrella for Peroni beer, an Italian beer, and I was trying to hit the dot of the I in Peroni with my golf balls. I took them one at a time from a green plastic bucket at my side, and lined up the shot, careful each time to check the placement of my feet in the sand and my hands on the club. When I hit my target, the balls would bounce off the umbrella and land in a neat pile to the side, but when I missed, they bounced away down the beach.
